Softball Ties Program Record For Consecutive Run-Rule Victories After 14-0 Win Over Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - University of Delaware softball defeated Drexel, 14-0, for its fifth consecutive win and third-straight victory by run rule - tying a program record. The Blue Hens are now 2-0 in CAA play and improved its record to 10-8.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Sydney Shaffer hit a two-run home run and had four RBIs.Â
- Gianna Costaro went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs.Â
- Morgan Hess hit a three-run home run and pitched four shutout innings with four strikeouts.Â
- Katie Scheivert went 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.Â
- Chloe Blantz drove in two runs and scored two runs.Â
- Marlayna Capaldi hit a two-run double.Â
- Ryleigh Thomas had an RBI single.Â
- Sorella Gallucci walked two times.Â
- Lillie Scheivert, Ellie Mulligan, Ellie Talley, and Graceyn Frost had hits off the bench.Â
- Emma Denison pitched a scoreless inning.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware struck in the first inning with four runs, highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Shaffer (two-run) and Costaro. Thomas capped off the inning with an RBI single. Hess struck out one in a hitless bottom half of the inning.Â
- Costaro had an RBI double in the second to put Delaware up 6-0. In the bottom half, Diomede and Katie Scheivert teamed up to throw a runner out at the plate to keep Drexel off the board.Â
- In the third, the Blue Hens pushed six runs across to take a 12-0 lead. Shaffer had a two-run single and Hess hit a three-run home run. Hess then pitched a scoreless bottom half with a strikeout.Â
- UD added two more runs in the fifth. Lillie Scheivert and Frost singled and Capaldi hit a two-run double to put Delaware up 14.Â
- Denison pitched the final frame to close out the win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware has won three consecutive games by run rule for the second time in program history. It was last done in March 2000 when they defeated Lafayette 10-0 and 8-0 on March 9 and Mount St. Mary's 10-0 on March 15.Â
- Delaware has started 2-0 in CAA play for the first time since 2021, also against Drexel. UD last started 3-0 in CAA play in 2013, once again Drexel. Â
- Delaware's 14-0 win was its largest shutout victory since winning 18-0 in the 2021 season opener against UMass.Â
- Delaware has won seven consecutive games against Drexel dating back to 2023, outscoring the Dragons 47-7.Â
- Delaware has scored at least 14 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since April 1976. UD also had a streak of five consecutive games scoring at least 14 runs earlier that season.Â
- Delaware's three home runs were a season-high and their most since hitting three against N.C. A&T last year on March 17. Delaware also hit back-to-back home runs for the first time this season and first time since Feb. 24, 2024 against Iowa State (Costaro, Julia Boyet).Â
- Shaffer and Costaro each have three-straight multiple hit games. Shaffer's four RBIs were a season-high.Â
- Costaro's home run was the 10th of her career, becoming the 13th Delaware player to reach 10 career home runs. Shaffer's home run was the eighth of her career.Â
- Hess' home run was the 35th of her career and seventh as a Blue Hen. She has thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings in the circle.Â
- Blantz has multiple RBIs in three-straight games.Â
- Of Capaldi's four hits this season, three of them have been run-scoring doubles.Â
- Frost's hit was the first of her career.Â
