Softball Completes Sweep of Drexel, Wins Program Record Fourth-Straight Game by Run Rule

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - Playing for the fourth consecutive day for the first time in program history, University of Delaware softball defeated Drexel 17-3 to complete a weekend sweep of the Dragons and go to 3-0 in CAA play. With the win, Delaware has won four consecutive games by run rule for the first time in program history.Â

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Mary Beth Cahalan had her best game as a Blue Hen, hitting a grand slam and driving in six runs while going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two doubles.Â
- Morgan Hess hit a pair of home runs, had five RBIs, and scored three runs. Â
- Gianna Costaro went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs.Â
- Sorella Gallucci went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBIs.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.Â
- Katie Scheivert had two hits and an RBI.Â
- Ellie Talley, Ellie Mulligan, and Veronica Diomede also recorded hits.Â
- Billie Kerwood earned the win by pitching all five innings with eight strikeouts and zero walks.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware scored four in the second, started by a two-run home run by Hess. Gallucci had an RBI double and Scheivert had an RBI single.Â
- Kerwood completed her second perfect inning to start the game and had two strikeouts through two.Â
- Four more runs scored in the third for Delaware as Shaffer and Costaro both had RBI singles and Cahalan had a two-run double.Â
- UD blew the game open with a five-run fourth, highlighted by a two-out grand slam by Cahalan. Mulligan also had an RBI single to make it 13-3.
- Kerwood ended the fourth inning by starting a 1-6-3 double play.Â
- In the top of the fifth Hausamann scored on a single by Costaro and Hess hit a three-run home run to give Delaware a 17-3 lead. Kerwood ended the game with a strikeout.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware has won a program record four-straight games by run rule, with all four games ending in five innings. UD has outscored opponents 54-7 over that span.Â
- This was Delaware's sixth run-rule victory this season. It had five all of last year.
- Delaware has scored double-digit runs in three consecutive games for the first time since April 1976.
- Delaware has started 3-0 in the CAA for the first time since 2013, when it started 9-0.Â
- Delaware has won eight straight against Drexel dating back to 2023. The Blue Hens have outscored the Dragons 66-10 in those eight games.Â
- Delaware's 17 runs were its most scored in a game since putting up 20 against Lehigh on April 6, 2022.Â
- Delaware's six doubles were one shy of tying its single-game record of seven done on April 11, 2018 against Delaware State.Â
- Delaware has hit three home runs in consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 20 and 25, 2022 against Boston University and Bowling Green.Â
- Delaware has double-digit hits in four consecutive games for the first time since April 2021.Â
- Costaro's four runs scored tied a single-game program record, done 11 other times (last by Hanna Garber against Boston University on Feb. 20, 2022).Â
- Costaro's four hits were a career-best and the most by a Blue Hen since March 17, 2024 against N.C. A&T.Â
- Gallucci's three doubles tied a program record, done only by Carolyn Szymanski on April 2, 2014 against Maryland Eastern Shore and Audie Kujala against Glassboro on April 20, 1977.Â
- Cahalan's grand slam was her first home run as a Blue Hen and the 10th home run of her career. She became the first player to hit a grand slam since Costaro last year on March 17 against N.C. A&T.Â
- Cahalan's six RBIs were also tied for third most in a game in program history, and most since Costaro in the March 17 game against N.C. A&T last year.Â
- Hess had her seventh career-multi-home run game, and second as a Blue Hen. She hit two against N.C. A&T last year on March 16.Â
- Shaffer has multiple hits in four-straight games. Costaro has multiple hits and at least one RBI in four-straight games.Â
- Hess is 11-for-28 (.392) over her last 10 games and 8-for-16Â in her last four games.Â
- Gallucci is 6-for-11 in her last five games with five RBIs.Â
- Mulligan has hits in three straight games.Â
- Talley has pinch hit singles in her last two opportunities.
