Softball Ties Program Record With Fifth Consecutive Shutout in Win Over North Carolina A&T

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Billie Kerwood took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and finished the day with just one hit and one walk allowed while striking out seven.Â
- Ellie Taley went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run.Â
- Lillie Scheivert went 3-for-3 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored.Â
- Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.Â
- Katie Scheivert had a double and two RBIs.Â
- Mary Beth Cahalan and Gianna Costaro both had RBI doubles.Â
- Veronica Diomede went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.Â
- Grace Hausamann had a pinch-hit RBI single.Â
- Josie Crossman got the final three outs of the game with a scoreless fifth inning.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kerwood struck out two in a perfect first inning.Â
- Cahalan doubled in the first run of the game with a two-outs to score Chloe Blantz.Â
- Kerwood struck out the side in the second.Â
- Delaware scored five runs on six hits in the third to pull away early. Lillie Scheivert had an RBI single in the inning and Katie Scheivert and Shaffer both had two-run singles.Â
- N.C. A&T got its first base runner in the third on an error, but Kerwood struck out two more in the inning.Â
- The Blue Hens scored four more runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead. Talley hit a two-run home run and Hausamann and Shaffer both had RBI doubles.Â
- The Aggies had a leadoff walk in the fourth but Kerwood retired the next three.Â
- N.C. A&T led off the fifth inning with a double to break up the no-hit bid. Crossman came on in relief and coaxed a groundout, popup and a soft line drive to retire the side and end the game. Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware has five shutouts in a row, tying a program record that was last done in March of 2000. It was also Delaware's CAA-leading 13th shutout of the season, tied for the second most in program history and trailing only the 19 pitched in 2000.Â
- Over Delaware's five-game shutout streak, it has outscored opponents 42-0.Â
- Delaware's pitching staff over the last five games have recorded 34 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched with just nine hits, zero walks, and one extra base hit allowed. Â Â
- Delaware improved to 8-0 all-time against N.C. A&T, outscoring the Aggies 77-10 in eight games.Â
- Talley's home run was the fourth of her career. Ten of her 17 hits are for extra bases.Â
- Shaffer recorded her fifth multi-hit game in her last six games and team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season. She also had her fourth three-RBI game of the season.Â
- Diomede extended her career-best hit streak to six consecutive games, and has reached base in a career-high eight-straight games.Â
- Katie Scheivert moved into the top-25 in program history in career hits, now standing at 133.Â
- Lillie Scheivert recorded her first-career three-hit game.Â
- Kerwood is now up to 177 strikeouts this season, tied with Kristi O'Connell (1999)Â for third most in a single-season in program history and 10 away from tying Carolynn Sloat (2004) for most in a season in program history.Â
- Kerwood also won her 16th game of the season, tying O'Connell's 2000 season and Sloat's 2005 season for 10th most in a season in UD history.Â
- Kerwood pitched eight innings against N.C. A&T this weekend and allowed two hits, one walk, and struck out 16. Â
- Delaware has 12 victories this season by run-rule, including seven in CAA play. This is the second time this season Delaware swept a CAA series all by run-rule (Drexel, March 7-9). Delaware also has defeated Hofstra (9-0, March 23) and Elon (9-1, March 28) via run rule.Â
- Dating back to last season, Delaware has scored a run in 41 consecutive games - extending its program record.Â
