Softball Records Pair of Shutouts Against Delaware State in Doubleheader Sweep

HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE
- Morgan Hess threw a one-hit shutout, allowing a walk and striking out six. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored.Â
- Gianna Costaro hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs as part of a 2-for-5 day at the plate.Â
- Sydney Shaffer reached base in all five of her plate appearances with two hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. She also had two runs scored and an RBI.Â
- Katie Scheivert went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases.Â
- Veronica Diomede went 2-for-3.Â
- Chloe Blantz had a hit, two walks, two runs scored, and an RBI.Â
- Ryleigh Thomas had an RBI triple off the bench.Â
- Jamie Chandler and Kristen Luzon each had pinch hits.Â
- Josie Crossman pitched a three-hit shutout while allowing zero walks and striking out five.Â
- Shaffer went 2-for-4.Â
- Scheivert had an RBI single.Â
- Thomas and Sorella Gallucci each went 1-for-3, with Galluci's hit going for a double.Â
- Diomede had a hit and a stolen base.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
- Delaware scored runs in the first three innings to take a 6-0 lead. In the first, ground outs by Mary Beth Cahalan and Hess brought home Scheivert and Blantz while Costaro scored Shaffer on an RBI single. Shaffer then scored Scheivert with a single in the second before Costaro's two-run home run in the third.Â
- Delaware added a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Hess.Â
- Hess retired the first 17 batters she faced and took a perfect game into the sixth inning. After a two-out walk, Hess coaxed a ground out to take a no-hitter into the seventh.Â
- Delaware tacked on four runs in the seventh to take an 11-0 lead. Ellie Talley doubled and scored on a triple from Thomas for the first run, then Chandler, Blantz, and Luzon each had RBI singles.Â
- Delaware State led off the seventh with its first hit of the game, but Hess retired the next three batters in order with two strikeouts for the win.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
- Crossman struck out a batter in each of the first three innings. She pitched a perfect fourth inning and worked around a pair of errors in the fifth.Â
- Delaware scored in the sixth after Blantz walked and Shaffer singled. Hess then hit a sacrifice fly to put UD up 1-0. Crossman pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half of the sixth.Â
- Gallucci doubled with one out in the seventh and scored an insurance run for Delaware on an RBI single by Scheivert.Â
- Delaware State only mustered a two-out single in the seventh as Crossman recorded another strikeout to finish off the doubleheader sweep.
GAME NOTES
- With Costaro's home run, Delaware tied its single-season home run record of 39 set in 2015. Costaro's home run was the 11th of her career.Â
- Hess recorded her 13th career shutout and fifth as a Blue Hen. This was her second one-hit shutout of the season, having also shutout Rider for nine innings on March 18. Hess also pitched a shutout this season against Morgan State on March 1, allowing two hits in a five-inning win.Â
- Crossman recorded her second shutout of the season, becoming the first Delaware freshman with two shutouts in a season since Delani Sheehan in 2021.
- Shaffer went 4-for-6 with two walks between the two games, reaching base in six of her nine plate appearances. She has multiple hits in three consecutive games and has seven hits in her last 10 at bats.Â
- During game one, Scheivert equaled her career high in runs scored with three - done five other times (including this season against Michigan on Feb. 7).
- After a season-and-a-half of battling injury, Chandler recorded a hit in her first collegiate at bat on the first pitch she saw.Â
- Diomede has six hits in her last 11 at bats.
- Thomas' triple was the first of her career.Â
- Delaware improved to 37-7-1 all-time against Delaware State, and has won seven consecutive games against the Hornets.Â
- Delaware recorded shutouts in both games of a doubleheader for the first time since May 5, 2023 against Hampton.Â
