Softball Sets Team Single-Season Home Run Record in Doubleheader Sweep of N.C. A&T

HEN HIGHLIGHTS GAME ONE
- Billie Kerwood dominated game one, facing the minimum over four shutout innings and allowing just one hit with nine strikeouts on 43 pitches.Â
- Mary Beth Cahalan went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run, a double, and scored two runs.Â
- Sydney Shaffer had two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.Â
- Morgan Hess went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.Â
- Thomas' record-setting home run was a three-run shot, and the first home run of her career. Â
- Marlayna Capaldi tripled and scored a run.Â
- Veronica Diomede had a hit, a walk, scored two runs, and stole two bases.Â
- Emma Denison pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout.Â
- Hess threw a three-hit shutout with no walks and five strikeouts. She also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.Â
- Cahalan went 3-for-3 with an RBI.Â
- Sorella Gallucci had two hits, scored a run, and drove in a run.Â
- Gianna Cosaro went 1-for-3 with an RBI.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
- Kerwood struck out the side in the first, and her first five outs of the game were via the strikeout. Cahalan picked off a runner at first base to end the second inning.Â
- Delaware had its largest scoring output in an inning this season in the bottom of the second, scoring eight runs on seven hits. Cahalan doubled to lead off the inning and Hess singled her in. After Costaro reached base, Thomas blasted a three-run homer to give Delaware a 4-0 lead. Capaldi tripled and scored on an RBI bunt single by Diomede, then Diomede came around to score on a groundout from Katie Scheivert. Hess had her second RBI single of the inning to put Delaware up 7-0 and then Costaro brought in the final run of the frame to give Delaware an eight-spot.Â
- Kerwood struck out two more in a perfect third. Shaffer doubled in a run in the bottom half before Cahalan hit a two-run home run to put Delaware ahead 11-0.Â
- Kerwood capped off her day with two strikeouts in the fourth.Â
- Denison pitched a perfect fifth inning with a strikeout to seal the win.Â
- Hess struck out two in the first, one in the second, and one in the third while allowing just two hits in the first three innings.Â
- Delaware broke out in the third with six runs on six hits. Cahalan, Hess, Costaro, and Gallucci all had RBI singles in the inning.Â
- Hess allowed just one hit between the fourth and fifth innings.Â
- UD scored two runs in the fifth to clinch the run-rule victory. Galluci singled and Blantz reached on a hit by pitch before both came around to score on wild pitches.Â
GAME NOTES
- Delaware set a new program record with its 40th and 41st home run of the season, moving past the mark of 39 set in 2015.Â
- Delaware has four shutouts in a row, its most since recording five-straight in March of 2000. It was also Delaware's CAA-leading 12th shutout of the season, tied for fourth most in program history.Â
- Delaware moved to 7-0 all-time against N.C. A&T, outscoring the Aggies 67-10 in seven games.Â
- In game one, Delaware's heart of the order - Shaffer, Cahalan, Hess - went 6-for-8 with five runs scored, five RBIs, and four extra base hits.Â
- Hess pitched her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. She has thrown 19.2 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the second inning of April 5 vs UNCW.Â
- Kerwood is now up to 170 strikeouts this season, tied with Kristi O'Connell (2000) for fourth most in program history.Â
- Cahalan went 5-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBIs, and a walk between the two games, including her two-run home run in game one.Â
- Shaffer's streak of four consecutive multi-hit games was snapped in game two. She was 9-for-13 from Sunday's UNCW game through the conclusion of game one today.Â
- Diomede is currently on a career-best five-game hit streak and is hitting 8-for-13 over her last seven games.Â
- Blantz has scored a run in six-straight games.Â
- Scheivert recorded her 32nd career stolen base, one shy of 10th most in program history, and 132 career hit, one shy of moving into the top-25 in program history.Â
- Capaldi's triple was the first of her career. Of her five hits this season, four have been for extra bases.Â
- Delaware has 11 victories this season by run-rule.Â
- Delaware has won at least 25 games in a season for the fifth consecutive year.Â
