No. 25 Delaware Opens Conference Play with Dramatic 1-0 Victory Over UNCW in Double Overtime

Ian Hennessy “We showed the resiliency needed to ride on some luck and on the opportunism of an alert Delgado to score late in the second overtime."
UNCW, which is earning votes in the NSCAA Top 25 poll this season, was able to be on the offensive for most of the game. For the first time this season, UD was outshot by a wide margin. UNCW registered 18 shots while the Blue Hens were able to record just eight shots.
Despite being in its own defensive zone for much of the night, Delaware managed to keep UNCW off the scoreboard for the first time this season. Saturday's game was the first time the Seahawks have been shutout since a 2-0 defeat to Hofstra last season.
UNCW was previously 4-0 against ranked opponents and had defeated No. 14 North Carolina in its previous game.
In addition to his game-winning goal, Delgado led the Blue Hens with three shots in the game. Goalkeeper Borja Barbero earned his fourth shutout of the season by tallying five saves in the winning effort.
Saturday's 1-0 victory was the first double overtime outing for the Blue Hens since losing to Drexel last season in the CAA Tournament.
Jamie Dell came into the game second to Delgado in goals in the CAA but was held off the scoreboard by the Blue Hens. Dell led the Seahawks with six shots, while David Sizemore and Colin Bonner accrued four shots each Saturday night. UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin had one save in the game.
Delaware will return to action this Wednesday at 7 pm when the Blue Hens host James Madison at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
