Fordham Outlasts Delaware, 49-44, in Tightly Contested Match

NEWARK, Del. – Three players scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough for the University of Delaware women's basketball team as Fordham University defeated the Blue Hens, 49-44, Tuesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Tina Martin drew up a play to get the ball to sharp-shooting junior Courtni Green (below left; Winchester, Va./Millbrook) behind the arc. The play began as planned as Green collected the pass, but she was unable to knock down the trey to tie the game.
Fordham came down with the defensive rebound and Delaware was forced to foul and send the Rams to the free throw line. Taryn Durant collected both free throws with five ticks left to go up, 49-44.
UD sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy) led the Hens (1-3) with 14 points while Green finished with 12 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) added 10 points and seven rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
Tina Martin“We need to continue to get better. Do I feel some encouragement because we took the Atlantic 10 champion down to the wire? Yeah, we played an older team tough, but we want to come up with a W. We continue to improve daily, but we need to keep clawing and fighting to win games like this.”
Junior Courtni Green
“Overall, our defense was a lot better and we rebounded better [than at East Carolina Friday]. The goal is to work hard and give it our all and I think we did that, but it's disappointing and tough to come out with the loss.”
Sophomore Erika Brown (at right)
“We got the shots at the end that were drawn up and that we wanted, but we just didn't hit them. In the end, it came down to making defensive stops, which we didn't do. We played really good defense throughout the game but when we needed to be crisp is when we had some breakdowns.”
