CINCINNATI, Ohio – The University of Delaware women's basketball team held the momentum in the final minutes of the game, but the Blue Hens were unable to complete a comeback Friday evening in a 63-58 loss to Northern Kentucky at Cincinnati's Fifth Third Arena.
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) led all scorers with a career-high 18 points in addition to five free throws in 35 minutes played.
Junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) contributed 12 points, five rebounds and a team-best four assists and three steals for Delaware (4-5).
The Norse (7-5) held a 13-point advantage just five minutes in to the second half before the Blue Hens chipped away at the lead and came within three at 48-45 off a fast break jumper from Green at 10:11.
With less than four minutes remaining, Green knocked down two free throws to cut NKU's lead to 58-56.
The Blue Hens would never get closer as the Norse recorded five free throws to just two for Delaware in the final minute.
Melody Doss guided NKU with 15 points while Christine Roush and Faith Sanders added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Roush collected a game-high seven rebounds for the Norse.
“We did a lot of silly things tonight. This team needs to mature and have an understanding of what we're supposed to be doing on the floor. We're getting closer, but it's a frustrating process to watch right now. Habits are hard to break and it's not going to happen overnight.”
