McCartney and Lyons Lead Delaware to 11-6 Victory Against Lafayette in Home Opener

McCartney (at left) scored
four of her game-high five goals in the second half for the 16th hat trick of her career. The junior added three draw controls, one groundball and one caused turnover for the Blue Hens (1-1).
Lyons, a transfer from Ohio State University, collected the first hat trick of her Delaware career with three goals while also controlling two draws.
Senior Chelsea Fay (below left; West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore Lauren VanDaniker (below right; Perry Hall, Md.) each contributed a goal and assist in the victory. Senior Bridget Burns (Newtown Square, Pa.) also picked up her first goal of the season.
Senior Alex Alois (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa.) each collected four groundballs while Alois caused four Lafayette turnovers.
Lafayette received goals from six different players while suffering its second loss of the season to move to 0-2 overall.
Delaware held a 4-2 advantage at halftime before the Leopards came out in the second half and immediately scored two goals to knot things up at 4-4.
McCartney broke that deadlock with the go-ahead goal at the 22:35 mark to spark a 6-0 Blue Hens run.
Lafayette's Ana White snapped the Leopards' scoreless streak with a goal of her own with 5:47 to go, but Lyons responded just a minute later to put the Hens up, 11-5. LC would receive one more goal in
the waning minutes, but it was too little, too late as Delaware walked away with the victory.
Lafayette's Meghan Curtin took the loss as she allowed 11 goals despite tallying 13 saves in 60 minutes of work.
“Tonight's game was definitely a team effort. Lafayette played a zone against us and it took a lot of ball movement to find open people. Caitlin stepped up for us in the second half and overall in the draw. I was glad to see her help us win draw controls and get the ball in the offensive end. The major goal production just happened to be Caitlin and Casey as they were open and able to convert, but this win was really a team effort on both ends of the field.”

“It was a rough game out there. It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win. Coming off of our game against Georgetown, we knew we needed to pull out a good win and it was nice that it came in our home opener. We came out prepared, as we knew how Lafayette played. The defense communicated a lot better this game and it showed.”

“This was a great start to our home season. We came out strong and we finished strong. The win was a team effort, but we need to keep working hard.”

· Lizzie Duffey registered three draw controls and three caused turnovers for the Hens.
