BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The University of Delaware women's cross country squad opened up its 2014 season Friday afternoon at the Lehigh Invitational and the Blue Hens posted a solid third place team finish out of eight teams.
Led by senior Katrina Steenkamer's sixth place individual finish, the Hens posted 59 points to finish third behind team champion West Virginia (25) and Lehigh (49) and ahead of Scranton, Moravian, Muhlenberg, DeSales, and Ursinus.
“We had a decent start to our season today at Lehigh,” said third-year head coach Wendy McFarlane, whose team placed third at the Colonial Athletic Association championships a year ago. “I was pleased with the ladies' efforts. We have some work to do, but today was a good indicator for positive outcomes later in the season.”
Steenkamer, expected to take over a big leadership role this season with the graduation of four-year standout Lindsay Prettyman, posted the second highest finish of her career as she covered the six-kilometer Goodman Course in a time of 22:35.76 to lead all UD runners. Elizabeth Weiler of Lehigh won the race in a time of 21:35.6.
Delaware had two other freshman runners post top 10 finishes as Adrienne Fraczkowski placed seventh with a time of 22:41.22 and Madeline Berman was 10th with a clocking of 22:59.47.
The Hens, ranked No. 8 in the preseason U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region poll announced earlier this past week, return to action Sept. 13 when they host the Delaware Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
