ITHACA, N.Y. -- Blue Hen freshman Kieran Purcell finished in second place in the individual standings while the University of Delaware men's golf squad tied for second in the team standings this weekend at the Cornell Invitational.
The Blue Hens sat in seventh place following Saturday's opening two rounds but fired a 295 on Sunday, the lowest team score of the day, to jump up into a tie for second. Dartmouth captured the 15-team title with a 904 score, while Delaware and Penn each tied for second place with 905 scores.
The Blue Hens, who were second at the season-opening Navy Fall Classic, have opened their fall campaign with consecutive finishes of second place or better for the first time since 2008.
Purcell carded a two under par 69 on Sunday on the par 71, 6,904-yard Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, placing second with a six over par 75-75-69-219. Purcell, who tied for the low round of the day, becomes the second UD freshman to finish in second place in as many tournaments this fall, after Erik Dulik placed second at the Navy Fall Classic.
Blake Carter of Longwood took home medalist honors by firing a five over par 73-70-75-218, edging Purcell by a stroke.
Blue Hen freshman Jack Gianniny posted his third consecutive five over par 76 during Sunday's round, finishing the tournament in a tie for 17th place with a 15 over par 76-76-76-228. Junior Kyle Martin, who carded a four over par 75, finished with a 16 over par 75-79-75-229 to tie for 23rd place.
Dulik also recorded a 75 on Sunday, finishing in a tie for 33rd place at the tournament with a 20 over par 79-79-75-233. Junior Colin McKenna carded a six over par 77 during his final round, tying for 38th place following his 21 over par 75-82-77-234.
The Blue Hens return to action on Sept. 28-29 when they compete in the George Mason Patriot Intercollegiate at the Laurel Hill Golf Club in Lorton, Va.
