TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware women's basketball squad dropped its third straight game Friday evening as Towson University defeated the Blue Hens, 56-49, at SECU Arena.
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) led Delaware (5-9, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association) with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Senior Joy Caracciolo (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) and junior Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) each added 10 points of their own in the loss. Redshirt sophomore Jodi Salyer (Roanoke, Va./Staunton River) dished out a team-best five assists.
The two teams held a 26-26 tie at halftime before the Tigers (6-9, 2-1 CAA) would go up by as much a nine in the second half. A jumper from Salyer with 1:02 remaining brought the Hens within four at 53-49, but Towson sealed the game with three free throws in the final minute of play.
LaTorri Hines-Allen guided TU with 20 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots in 39 minutes of action. Ciara Webb added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers.
“At this point, we've gotten a little bit better, but we're just not scoring enough points. We have to generate points. After we do get a lead, we shoot ourselves in the foot and give something easy up and then lose our focus. We did a great job taking care of the ball tonight. I thought there were segments where we played very good defense, but then we had those mental lapses were we gave up open shots.”
Sophomore Hannah Jardine
“It is frustrating right now that we've lost three, but we're turning the corner. Our turnovers were better this game, but we just couldn't pull it out in the end. It's frustrating because we're getting closer, but we can't get over that edge. We've been getting down early in games and have had to battle back, but this one was even more frustrating because we brought it to a tie at halftime and it was 0-0 to start the second half. We couldn't put the ball in on the offensive side and then eventually they hit a couple of shots and we found ourselves fighting back again.”
