Delaware Concludes Road Trip With Three-Set Loss at William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team closed an arduous stretch of four road matches in eight days with a three-set loss to William & Mary Monday afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
The Tribe captured the match by set scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-21 while improving to 8-12 overall and 2-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware dropped to 9-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Blue Hen junior Alexa Swann led UD with 11 kills while committing just one attack error to hit .455 on the afternoon, and she also added a match-high five blocks. Chandler Bryant contributed nine kills for Delaware, while Julia Anderson handed out 25 assists. Katie Hillman posted a team-high 15 digs for the Blue Hens, while Ariel Shonk chipped in with 12 during the contest.
Dessi Koleva paced the Tribe with 15 kills and a .382 attack percentage, while Heather Pippus and Paige Humphrey added seven kills apiece.
After Delaware won the opening point of the match, William & Mary ran off six straight and led for the rest of the stanza. The Blue Hens closed within a point nine times but could not pull even, as the Tribe eventually took the set on a kill by Koleva.
After the teams were knotted at 9-9 in the second frame, William & Mary captured the next eight points to take control and won the set by a nine-point margin. The Tribe won 11 of 14 points midway through the third set to take a 20-12 advantage, and Delaware would not get closer than three the rest of the way.
The Blue Hens return home on Friday to host Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the Carpenter Sports Building.
