Gianniny in Fifth Place, Blue Hens Sixth After First Day of Elon Phoenix Invitational

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- Blue Hen sophomore Jack Gianniny sits in fifth place while the University of Delaware men's golf squad is sixth in the team standings following Monday's action at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.
Gianniny carded a one under par 70-71-141 on the par 71, 6,867-yard Alamance Country Club course to end the day in fifth place in the individual standings. Gianniny, who earned medalist honors during UD's previous tournament at the Binghamton Fall Invitational, is five shots behind leader Jacob Hicks of East Carolina.
The Blue Hens posted rounds of 293 and 298 to finish the day in sixth place out of 16 teams with a two-round total of 591. East Carolina leads the field with a 564 score, Elon is second at 575, and VCU and Charleston Southern are tied for third at 578.
Blaine Lafferty is tied for 28th place for Delaware following his six over par 70-78-148 score on Monday, while Kieran Purcell is tied for 50th place after he fired a 10 over par 77-75-152. Marc Oliveri carded a 13 over par 81-74-155 to end the day tied for 69th place, while Mark Benevento recorded a 16 over par 76-82-158 to finish tied for 80th place.
The third and final round of the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
