NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men's basketball team and the City of Newark are teaming up with the Jefferson Awards Foundation to fight hunger in the Newark area during the upcoming holiday season.
The Blue Hens are accepting donations at the Bob Carpenter Center during their home games scheduled for Nov. 24 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, Dec. 1 vs. Bradley and Dec. 3 vs. South Florida. Fans are asked to donate almonds, peanuts, pistachios and other nuts; canned or dried beans; canned soup, tomatoes, tuna and vegetables; dried fruit; pasta; peanut butter; rice; steel cut oatmeal; tomato sauce; and vegetable, beef or chicken stock.
Other dropoff locations include the City of Newark Municipal Building on 220 South Main Street and various businesses throughout Newark. Food will then be distributed to local families in Newark on Sunday, Dec. 20.
“One in six Americans faces hunger daily. The Jefferson Awards is excited to partner with Coach Monté Ross and the UD men's basketball program, Mayor Polly Sierer, and The City of Newark to face these hunger issues,” said Michele Fidance, Jefferson Awards Foundation National Director, Delaware & Central Florida. “The UD men's basketball team makes community service a priority in their program. They aim to educate their players to serve the community during service events throughout the year. As a previous Jefferson Award recipient, Mayor Sierer jumped at the opportunity to be a partner in this important cause. Through the power of this partnership we are able to make a greater impact to support people right in our own backyard. We are thankful for Mayor Sierer and Coach Ross' commitment to the Jefferson Awards and serving the Newark community.”
“The City of Newark is so pleased to be able to partner with the University of Delaware men's basketball team and the Jefferson Awards program,” remarked Polly Sierer, Mayor, City of Newark, Delaware. “As a 2013 Jefferson Award recipient myself, I am grateful that Coach Ross and the young men on this team are committed to helping those in need in Newark. The Future Isn't Hungry program is a perfect mechanism to get our youth, young adults, student-athletes and residents in our community involved in assisting our neighbors in Newark who need our support during this holiday season. As Mayor of Newark, I am proud to be a part of this food drive event.”
“We are thilled as a team to be involved in this community service initiative,” said Ross, currently in his 10th season leading the Blue Hens. “Our players understand this is so much more than about just them, as it's about giving service to others during this holiday season.”
