VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Turnovers were the nemesis for the University of Delaware men's lacrosse squad once again Saturday as the Blue Hens committed a season-high 19 miscues and could never catch up from an early deficit in suffering a 10-4 setback to host Villanova at Villanova Stadium.
Delaware (2-3), coming off an 11-10 win over Mt. St. Mary's on Tuesday, could not continue the winning ways as the Blue Hens fell behind 4-0 in the first quarter and were never able to catch up to the Wildcats (3-1).
Tom Holland, Beau Jones, Brian Kormondy, and Chris Colaneri each scored goals for Delaware while Brett Anton made a career-high 17 saves in goal.
"I give credit to Villanova for a very well played game," said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. "We are very disappointed that we did not play cleanly and we turned the ball over too much to beat a quality team. We have a quick turnaround and have to play another very good team Tuesday in (19th-ranked) Holy Cross."
Villanova, which is receiving votes in the USILA national Top 20 poll, won its third straight game as Kurtis Naslonski, Jack Curran, Danny Seibel, and Johnny Gallaway each netted two goals.
Villanova held advantages of 49-24 in shots, 26-22 in groundballs, and 11-7 in faceoffs and had seven less turnovers than the Blue Hens.
The Wildcats, who downed Delaware on the Main Line for the fourth straight time, jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter as Seibel netted both of his goals in the opening stanza. Delaware rallied back on goals by Jones and Holland in the first five minutes of the second half, but Villanova took a 6-2 lead into the break.
Delaware narrowed the gap to 8-3 on Colaneri's first goal of the season with 7:45 left to play, but the Hens never got closer the rest of the day.
HEN SCRATCHINGS:
• Delaware will return home for the first time in nearly a month Tuesday, Mar. 3, when the Blue Hens host 19th-ranked Holy Cross at 3 p.m. at Delaware Stadium
• Kormondy extended his three-year point-scoring streak to 26 with his second quarter goal
• Delaware had defeated Villanova 11-8 last season at Delaware Stadium
• All-American faceoff candidate Tyler Barbarich returned to action for the first time since Feb. 7 and won 5 of 10 attempts
