NEWARK, Del. – It was a defensive battle from the start and in the end, the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team held on for a 6-5 victory over Towson Wednesday evening in the Colonial Athletic Asso
ciation opener at Delaware Stadium.
The win halted an eight-game losing streak to the Tigers and is the first for the Blue Hens over the three-time defending CAA Champions since 2007.
Delaware (6-3, 1-0 CAA) led off the game with a 3-0 advantage and held Towson (2-3, 0-1 CAA) scoreless for the first 22 minutes of the contest before the Tigers rallied for three goals of its own.
UD junior Kara Dattellas (at left; Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) broke the tie in the second half and put the Hens ahead, 5-4 at 18:59.
The score remained frozen for the next 16-plus minutes before Emily Gillingham notched her second goal of the game for TU.

“For us, every game has something on the line and CAA play is always a dogfight. We knew we were going to have Towson coming in with something to prove and I'm excited to see our team walk away with a victory at home. It is something we needed after last week and something we need to get the momentum building that we want. A win helps us get back on track, but we need to continue to improve.”
Caitlin McCartney
“Coming off of a tough week last week, we definitely knew it was going to be a tough game and it was a defensive game for sure on both sides of the ball. We knew we had to pressure a few specific players and in the end we executed the game plan. This was a win we needed to grab and have for a momentum builder. It's always a battle against Towson and at the end, I did not want a repeat of last year where we lost by one in overtime after leading the majority of the game.”
