NEWARK, Del. -- Saint Joseph's scored nine straight first half goals and the University of Delaware could never recover as the Blue Hens dropped a 14-6 non-league men's lacrosse verdict Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
Delaware took a quick 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game on Joey Prieto's first career goal, but the Hawks stormed back with five goals in that opening period and scored the first four goals of the second frame on the way to the insurmountable 9-2 halftime lead.
Senior midfielder Jeff Heath (Saint Joseph's Prep/Newtown Square, Pa.) scored two goals to lead the Blue Hens (4-6) while senior attackman Beau Jones (Germantown Academy/Philadelphia, Pa./below) and sophomore midfielder Steve Delargy (Morristown/Morristown, N.J.) each had a goal and an assist and senior Tom Holland (Calvert Hall/Baltimore, Md.) and Prieto (at right) accounted for the other goals.
“We had a good two days of preparation, there was a lot of emotion in the lockerroom, but we just didn't execute today,” said Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw. “We had a difficulty on faceoffs today and we were just inconsistent. This is a great group that works hard and we just have to emphasis what we have to do to get better from this game and prepare for Hofstra (next Saturday).
Saint Joseph's (4-5), a former Colonial Athletic Association foe of Delaware, snapped a two-game losing streak as Ryan McGee scored six goals and dished out an assist, Mike Rastivo contributed two goals and three assists, and Chris Blewitt and Kevin Forster each chipped in with two goals and an assist.
After Prieto's goal just 2:36 into the game gave UD a 1-0 lead, the Hawks stormed back as McGee scored three goals in the opening period and added his fourth with 3:10 left in the second stanza to give SJU a 9-1 lead.
Delaware finally broke a 26-minute scoring drought on a goal by Jones with 1:41 left to cut the halftime deficit to 9-2.
Delaware got goals from Heath and Holland to close out the third quarter and cut the deficit to 10-4, but Saint Joseph's scored the first four goals of the final period and never looked back.
Saint Joseph's outshot the Hens 42-22, won 17 of 24 faceoffs, and forced the Hens into a season-high tying 19 turnovers.
Delaware wore special white uniforms with pink letters in support of Cancer Awareness Day at Delaware Stadium.
The team designed special t-shirts that UD players and coaches wore and were available for fans to purchase with proceeds benefiting cancer research.
