Three Blue Hen Boats Advance to Finals at Murphy Cup Regatta

CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The University of Delaware rowing team put forth a strong showing at the 33rd annual Murphy Cup Regatta Saturday on the Cooper River as the Varsity Four, Novice Eight, and Varsity Eight crews each advanced to the finals in their events.
"It was good to have three crews rowing in finals and we were excited to see the Novice Eight come home with medals," said University of Delaware head coach Kevin Gruber. "All crews put forth great effort today in challenging conditions."
The top showing for UD came from Novice Eight boat which finished in second place in the finals race with a time of 7:34.54.
The Varsity Four boat was the second Blue Hen crew to qualify for the finals. The boat won its heat with a time of 8:17.55 before coming in fifth in the finals in a time of 8:30.94.
After finishing in fourth place in their heat by posting a time of 7:18.02, the Blue Hens Varsity Eight boat improved upon their time in the finals and finished in 7:13.14, which was good for sixth place. Last season, the only Delaware boat to qualify an event's finals was the Varsity Eight crew.
The Second Varsity Eight squads finished in fourth and fifth respectively in their heat. The “A” boat with coxswain Molly Gardner tallied a time of 7:30.37, while the “B” boat led by coxswain Sarah Tenenbaum finished the race in 8:10.60.
Coxswain Alex Aber led the Delaware Novice Four to a 9:19.84 time, which was good for fourth place in the heat.
The Blue Hens will return to the water Apr. 11-12 as Delaware competes in the Knetch Cup Regatta on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
