NEWARK, Del. – Hofstra University held the University of Delaware to two crucial scoring droughts Friday evening as the rv Blue Hens dropped their first Colonial Athletic Association game of the season by a score of 6-5 to the rv Pride at Delaware Stadium.
UD (9-5, 2-1 CAA) opened the game with a 3-1 lead before HU (8-4, 3-0 CAA) scored three unanswered goals to take the 4-3 advantage into halftime. The Hens were held without a goal for 18:06 in the first half.
Juniors Casey Lyons (at left; Georgetown, Ontario/Berkshire) and Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) got Delaware on board to start the second half to take the 5-4 lead. The Blue Hens were then held scoreless over the final 19-plus minutes of the game.
Pride senior Brittain Altomare posted the game-winning goal off a free-position shot with 12:24 on the clock. Neither team scored a goal in the remaining time.
Sophomore Jamie Schwartz (below right; Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) led Delaware with three points on two assists and one goal. Lyons added a goal and assist for the Blue Hens.
Caitlin McCartney Alex Zaugra (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) w
as credited with the loss despite recording six saves.
Altomare, a Tewaaraton National Player of the Year Watch List selection, led all scorers with four points on two goals and two assists. She also controlled a game-high five draws. Goalie Kelsey Gregerson earned the win with eight saves.
“Our team played tough for 60 minutes and unfortunately we didn't capitalize on some of the opportunities that we had. I thought we battled and I'm proud of the team for that. That's how we're going to have to keep playing in the CAA and we have to find a way to come out on top in the next few games.”
Junior Attacker Casey Lyons
“This is a tough loss to swallow. They capitalized on our small mistakes, which we were unable to overcome.”
