NEWARK, Del. -- Kelly Lupton and Kiersten Coffman each recorded strong outings in the circle while Mariah Kondravy had two hits in each game as the University of Delaware softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Coppin State, 3-2 and 7-1, Tuesday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.
The Eagles, who dropped to 3-24 and have now lost nine straight following the pair of defeats, struck first in the opener by pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning. However the Blue Hens, who improved to 25-18 on the year, got a run back in the second when a bases loaded groundout by Danielle Wissinger allowed Heather Oakley to cross the plate.
Delaware then took the lead in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Kondravy and Oakley, accounting for the final runs of the contest.
Lupton would take it from there, retiring the side in order during the final four frames to seal the victory. Lupton, who improved to 3-2 on the year, allowed just one walk and struck out seven while tossing five hitless innings of relief.
Kondravy and Oakley each finished 2 for 3 at the plate for Delaware while Jessica Grisler, Shelby Jones and Giovanna Kolofer added a hit apiece.
Coppin State again took the lead in the nightcap with an unearned run in the top of the first, before the Blue Hens took control with four two-out runs in the bottom of the third. Sarah Bencivenga legged out an infield single to drive home Grisler, and after Kondravy and Lisa Stacevicz blasted RBI doubles, Oakley capped the rally with a single up the middle to allow pinch runner Morgan Schroll to score.
Hannah George led off the fifth with a walk and eventually scored on a single by Stacevicz, while Stacevicz singled home another run during a two-run sixth inning that closed the scoring. Coffman picked up her second win of the year after allowing just the unearned run on two hits in five innings of work, while Jordan Cargile and Taylor Curran each fired a scoreless inning of relief.
Stacevicz was 3 for 4 with three RBI during the second victory, while Bencivenga and Kondravy each added two hits.
Delaware is right back in action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader at UMES.
