NEWARK, Del. – Senior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) posted a career-best game Friday evening as the 18th-ranked University of Delaware field hockey team battled for a tough 7-4 victory over Temple University at Fred P. Rullo Stadium.
Patzner notched her first career hat trick with three goals and added an assist for a career-high seven points for the Blue Hens (5-0). With her performance, the midfielder became just the seventh player in program history to break the 100 career-point plateau.
Junior Esmée Peet (at left; Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) registered two goals and an assist while classmate Kayla Devlin (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) recorded her first career points with one goal and one assist.
Senior captain Allie Mikelson (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) also logged multiple points and finished the night with two assists and a defensive save while freshman Lisa Giezeman (below right; Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartens College) nabbed her team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Sophomore keeper Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) amassed two saves to improve to 5-0.
Sarah Deck guided the Owls (2-3) with two goals while Rachael Mueller and Sarah Keer had one each. Haley Mitchell collected five saves for Temple and fell to 2-3 on the year.
“It's nice to be home after two weekends on the road. We knew today would be a fight. Temple is a great team and they were ready to come out and show us that they are a team to be reckoned with. We had to be ready from the get go and we did just that. It was nice to be in a position that we were always in the lead, but we never really extended it until the end. Tonight was a good game, results-wise and performance-wise.”

Senior Captain Allie Mikelson
“We were excited to have so many of our friends and family in the stands. It feels great to come out with the win in front of our fans. It's nice to be ranked, but our philosophy is to take each game a step at a time. On any given day, anything can happen.”
Senior Michaela Patzner
“It feels great to come out on top at home. We know we're ranked and undefeated, but those are just numbers on paper. At the end of the day, it only matters what we do on the field each and every game. We have to continue to stay strong and play tough every single day.”
