NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware runners Betsy Erlanger and Lauren Zodl captured the top two individual spots to lead the Blue Hen women's cross country squad to a second place team finish at UD's annual Delaware Invitational Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
Running under threatening skies, Erlanger, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa. (Upper St. Clair HS), covered the six-kilometer course 23:13.48 to take the individual championship, edging teammate Zodl, a
freshman from Little Egg Harbor Twp., N.J. (Pinelands Regional HS) , by almost 32 seconds (23:44.46).
Erlanger, who placed second at the meet a year ago, captured her first career individual title and her fifth career top 10 showing. Zodl (at left) led the team in its season opening second place finish at the Lehigh Invitational last week.
“I was happy with our performance today, we did very well individually,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “Our strategy of running in a pack was not there today so I would have liked to see us run a little better as a group. I know we are better than what we showed today but we have the ability to be contenders for top spots down the road. Betsy (Erlanger) really stepped up today and showed what she can do and Lauren (Zodl) is a tough runner who starts out subtle but is a strong finisher.”
Delaware, which captured the team title last season and also in 2012, placed six runners in the top 20 on Saturday, four of them freshmen. Freshman Leanza Lopez (Carlisle/Carlisle, Pa.) was seventh in 24:08.92, freshman Emily Paolucci (Padua, Del./Logan Township, N.J.) was 10th (24:30.46), freshman Kathleen Dailey (St. Rose/Manasquan, N.J.) was 15th (24:47.74), and sophomore Angie Spadaccini (Padua/Wilmington, Del.) was 19th (25:06.53).
The College of New Jersey won the team title with 26 points, outdistancing the Blue Hens by just eight points in the 11-team field that included teams from all NCAA divisions. Rowan was third with 100 points followed by Seton Hall (102) and Stockton (133) in the top five.
In the men's race, The College of New Jersey captured the team title with 15 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Rowan in the nine-team field. Andrew Tedeschi of TCNJ captured the individual title with a time of 26:55.21 over the eight-kilometer course.
Delaware will take next week off and return to action Oct. 2 at the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
