Newcomers Excel as Hens Place Second at Season-Opening Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Four University of Delaware freshmen finished in the Top 20, including sixth place finisher Lauren Zodl, as the Blue Hens opened the 2015 cross country season with a second place finish at the Lehigh Invitational Friday evening at Lehigh University.
Zodl (at right) covered the six-kilometer course in 23:00.6 to lead all Blue Hen runners. Delaware 
collected 39 team points to finish second overall, trailing winner Lehigh (27) and beating out LaSalle (64). Muhlenberg outran DeSales and Moravian to win the Non-Division I title.
Zodl, a freshman from Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J. (Pinelands Regional High School) became the first Delaware runner to lead the Blue Hens in her collegiate debut since Cassie White posted a fourth place finish at the Towson Invitational in 2007. Zodl's time Friday was just 15 seconds off second place in tightly-packed competition.
Also for the Blue Hens, junior Gabrielle Alaimo placed eighth in 23:07.0, junior Betsy Erlanger was 10th in 23:14.9, freshman Leanza Lopez was 11th in 23:15.4, freshman Kathleen Dailey was 16th in 23:54.1, and freshman Emily Paolucci was 17th in 24.00. A total of eight runners participated for Delaware.
Delaware will return to action next weekend when the Blue Hens host the Delaware Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. at White Clay Creek State Park. Delaware is the defending team champion.
