ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Delaware field hockey squad once again used a complete team effort Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens defeated Cornell, 5-0, at Marsha Dodson Field.
Following a game in which UD used seven scorers to pick up a 4-1 win at Fairfield, the Blue Hens once again saw seven different players collect at least one point against the Big Red.
Junior Maura Zarkoski (Eagleville, Pa./Villa Maria) put Delaware (4-0) on board almost immediately with a high shot goal just 1:01 into the game. Freshman Kiki Bink (Wageningen, The Netherlands/RSG Pantarijn) was credited with the assist.
Jacki Coveleski (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) and freshman Greta Nauck (Krefeld, Germany/Gymnasium am Moltkeplatz) continued the scoring blitz with goals in the third and fourth minutes, respectively.Junior Esmée Peet (Zeewolde, The Netherlands/RSG Slingerbos) added the fourth tally of the day in the 16th minute to take the 4-0 lead into halftime.
In the 49th minute, senior Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany/Karolinen Gymnasium) dished out a pass to freshman Lisa Giezeman (Leidschendam, The Netherlands/Sin-Maartens College), who notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Sophomore Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) tied a season-high with four saves against Cornell (0-2) for her first career full shutout.
Katy Weeks registered three shots, two on goal, for the Big Red while Luisa Schulte-Bockum collected two defensive saves. Elizabeth Schaeffler started in goal for Cornell and tabbed three saves, but four goals allowed for the loss. Mackenzie Gagliardi finished the game with 52-plus minutes played with four saves and one goal allowed.
“Congrats to the team for scoring five quality goals, increasing the moments and duration of quality possession and better management of outlets under pressure. However, there are still plenty of areas we as a team can improve in. All of this is a part of playing and learning. I am happy for our team with the start of our season and even more excited with the potential of this players group.”
Jacki Coveleskiis second with 10 points (3g, 4a).
