NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore guard Kory Holden scored a game-high 29 points and Delaware connected on a season-high 14 three-pointers, but the Blue Hens could not keep pace with sharpshooting William & Mary and dropped a 94-79 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball decision Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
William & Mary (14-6, 6-3 CAA), which snapped a personal nine-game losing streak to the Blue Hens, placed four scorers in double figures and knocked down 16 treys on the way to the victory. The Tribe
shot 53.6 percent from the field in the second half (15 of 28) and connected on 16 of its 19 attempts from the foul line.
Holden converted on six three-pointers in nine attempts himself and registered his eighth 20-point plus game of the campaign but the Blue Hens (5-15, 0-9 CAA) dropped their 12th straight game, including their fifth straight at home.
Delaware junior guard Cazmon Hayes (below right-photo by Macy Oteri) added 21 points, including five three-pointers, Anthony Mosley (at left-photo by Jim Stiehl) chipped in with 11 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Marvin King-Davis pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Blue Hens were also hot from long distance as they drained 14 of 29 three-point attempts. The 14 treys were a season-high and the fifth highest single game mark in UD history.
But William & Mary was even hotter as the Tribe made 16 three-pointers to tie the highest total allowed by the Hens in school history.
William & Mary guard David Cohn scored a career-high 23 points and dished out nine assists while Connor Burchfield came off the bench to hit 6 of 7 three-pointers and finish with 18 points. Omar Prewitt also had 18 points and six assists and Terry Tarpey contributed 16 points and nine rebounds in a balanced effort.
William & Mary dished out a season-high 28 assists for the game - tying for the most by a CAA team this season - and turned the ball over just five times.
“Playing zone against a team like that is very difficult because they just have too many shooters,” said Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We got the lead down to six with eight minutes to go, but just
ran out of gas. We were able to score the ball but only got to the foul line 12 times tonight, which is a little disappointing. Offensively we shot the ball well, so hopefully that will continue."
The teams played evenly throughout a first half that featured six ties and saw neither team lead by more than five points.
The Tribe outscored the Hens 7-3 over the last two minutes to take a 42-38 advantage at the break.
William & Mary stormed out in the second half and used a 15-4 run to take a 57-42 lead just six minutes into the stanza.
But Delaware fought back and narrowed the deficit to six at 66-60 with 7:54 remaining following eight straight points from Holden, including consecutive three-pointers.
Unfortunately the Hens would never get closer as Cohn answered with a three to push the lead back up to nine. Delaware did pull to within 78-70 on a Holden jumper with 4:08 left, but the Tribe reeled of 8 of the next 10 points to put the game out of reach.
