OXFORD, Ohio -- Blue Hen sophomore Chivarsky Corbett buried a tie-breaking three-pointer from the top of the key with 5.2 seconds remaining as the University of Delaware men's basketball team posted a thrilling 68-66 victory over Miami (Ohio) Friday night at Millett Hall.
Delaware (3-1) led from the 16:13 mark of the first half until the final moments of the game, when the RedHawks' Rod Mills drained a three-pointer from the right wing to knot the contest at 64-64 with 14 seconds to play.
But Anthony Mosley raced down the court into the paint, before feeding Corbett at the top of the key for the game-winning triple.
The Blue Hens then fouled Miami's Michael Weathers, who hit two free throws with 3.8 seconds to play. Corbett was then sent to the line, and after hitting the first foul shot, he missed the second but chased down the rebound in the corner.
The RedHawks (1-2) eventually came up with the loose ball and Weathers' heave from the opposite foul line was good, but clearly after the buzzer.
Mosley led Delaware with 17 points to go with four assists and four steals, while Corbett and Darian Bryant each contributed 16 on the night. Cazmon Hayes was the fourth Blue Hen in double figures with 13 points, while Eric Carter grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Weathers led all scorers with 24 points while adding seven rebounds, six assists and four steals for Miami, while Jake Wright chipped in with 11 points.
“I'm really proud of our group, this win showed the growth of this team,” UD head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “We work every day on executing in late game situations and we haven't fouled up three in practice, but our guys did a great job executing tonight.
“What a day for Chivarsky Corbett. He hasn't gotten off to the best start this season, but he stepped up and hit some really big shots tonight, and obviously the biggest one to win it at the end. Now we've got to get some rest and be ready to go tomorrow afternoon.”
Delaware led by as many as nine in the first half before taking a 35-29 lead into the break, and again went up nine three times in the second period, the final time at 48-39 at the 10:21 mark.
The Blue Hens led 61-58 when Weathers stole the ball from Bryant at midcourt, but then called a timeout Miami didn't have, resulting in a technical foul. Corbett hit the ensuing free throw, but Weathers countered with a three-point play. Mosley then hit two free throws before Mills tied the game with a three, but Corbett answered with a triple of his own to win it for Delaware.
The Blue Hens are right back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on Northern Kentucky on the second day of the Tarkett Sports Classic.
