OXFORD, Ohio – Northern Kentucky used a big run early in the second half to break open a close game and led the rest of the way as the Norse posted a 74-53 men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Millett Hall.
Delaware (3-2) took a slim 21-20 advantage into the half but NKU (2-2) scored the first nine points of the second period, while a three-pointer by Drew McDonald extended the run to 14-1 and gave the Norse a 34-22 lead with 16:12 to play.
The Blue Hens finally got their offense going with 15 minutes left on a Chivarsky Corbett three-pointer, while a Ryan Daly triple and a Cazmon Hayes layup cut the deficit to 39-35 with 12:17 on the clock.
UD got within three at 41-38 two minutes later, but Cole Murray and Lavone Holland II hit consecutive three-pointers to put NKU back up nine with 9:27 to play.
It was still just a seven-point game at 51-44 with eight minutes left, but the Norse scored the next eight points to go up 15 and led comfortably the rest of the way.
McDonald notched career-highs of 28 points and 13 rebounds to pace NKU, while Carson Williams and Holland II each added 12 points.
Hayes and Daly led the Blue Hens with 13 points apiece, with Hayes grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and Anthony Mosley contributing 11 points.
Delaware struggled offensively throughout the contest, shooting just 30.2 percent including 3 of 16 from behind the arc. The Blue Hens also handed out just five assists while committing 16 turnovers on the day.
UD limited the Norse to 25.0 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes, but NKU shot 56.7 percent from there while piling up 54 second half points.
“We weren't ready to play at the start of the second half, and were sloppy on both ends of the court,” Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “We were very poor defensively to give up 54 points in the half. The first half wasn't pretty, but we had the lead. We've just got to execute better, and that falls on me. We've got to bounce back and be ready to go tomorrow.”
Both team struggled mightily in the opening half, as Delaware shot just 6 of 22 but took a one-point lead into the break due to hitting 8 of 10 free throws and holding the Norse to an 8 of 32 performance from the floor.
NKU led for the first 13 minutes of the contest before a reverse layup by Mosley gave UD a 15-14 advantage, while a late bucket by Hayes put the Blue Hens up a point heading into the break. However the Norse scored 14 of the first 15 points of the second half to take control.
Delaware closes play at the Tarkett Sports Classic with a 12 noon game on Sunday against Austin Peay.
