TAMPA, Fla. – South Florida jumped out to a double digit lead just over four minutes into the game and cruised from there as the Bulls coasted to an 81-53 non-conference men's basketball victory over Delaware Thursday night at the Sun Dome.
The Bulls (6-5), who snapped a two-game losing streak, shot 49.1 percent from the field, knocked down 24 free throws and held a 48-37 rebounding advantage during the win.
Geno Thorpe and Tulio Da Silva each scored a game-high 18 points for USF, while Bo Ziegler added 10 and Malik Fitts and Luis Santos both collected nine rebounds.
Delaware (6-6) shot just 27.3 percent from the floor including 8 of 33 from three-point range while falling for the third time in four games.
Blue Hen freshman Ryan Daly led the Blue Hens with 17 points while Tampa native Chivarsky Corbett contributed 16 points and a team-leading six rebounds during his homecoming game.
USF dominated early on, scoring the first six points of the contest and jumping out to a 13-2 lead just 4:20 into the game when Michael Bibby drilled a three-pointer.
Daly answered with back to back three-pointers, and the Blue Hens pulled within 19-13 on a Devonne Pinkard triple at the 13:15 mark. But USF eventually extended the lead to 17 points twice late in the half, before two Corbett three free throws cut the Delaware deficit to 43-28 at the break.
The Bulls continued to increase the margin early in the second period, taking a 54-33 advantage with 15:14 on the clock. UD pulled within 56-40 three minutes later on a Daly layup, but USF countered by scoring the next 10 points and led by as many as 29 in the late stages.
“I'm very disappointed with our effort tonight,” Blue Hen head coach Martin Ingelsby said. “USF is a good team and has some high-major bodies, and they did a good job of guarding our ball screens. We just need to compete harder and get back to playing tough basketball. We hang our hat on our defense, and to allow 81 points in three straight road games is unacceptable. It was a good day for Chivarsky (Corbett), and I hope he can keep that going after the holiday break.”
Delaware closes out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday when the Blue Hens host Iona at 7 p.m. at the Bob Carpenter Center.
