NEWARK, Del. -- Senior forward Marvin King-Davis led five Blue Hen scorers in double figures with a game-high 23 points and the Delaware men's basketball squad reached the win column for the first time since December with a 69-60 victory over rival Drexel at the Bob Carpenter Center Thursday evening.
King-Davis also pulled a game-high nine rebounds, including the 500th of his career, and surpassed
the 20-point mark for the fifth time this year as the Blue Hens (6-18, 1-12 Colonial Athletic Association) snapped a school-record 15-game losing streak and captured their first league win of the season.
The victory also snapped a five-game home losing streak and was the Hens' first victory since a 70-69 win at Marist back on Dec. 12.
“I'm really proud of our guys' effort tonight, the key was that we didn't panic when we got down in the first half,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “We just kept going play by play, and in the second half were able to get some momentum and separation. Marvin (King-Davis) was terrific, and really got us going in the second half. We played like a confident team, and I'm happy that we made some winning plays down the stretch."
Junior guard Cazmon Hayes (left) added 13 points and seven rebounds, sophomore guard Kory Holden added 12 points, sophomore guard Anthony Mosley had 11 points and seven rebounds, and junior swingman Devonne Pinkard (below) chipped in with 10 points to lead the balanced effort.
Delaware helped itself by knocking down 26 of 33 free throws (78.8 percent) for the game, shot an even 50 percent from the field (19 of 38), held a slim 33-30 advantage on the boards, and turned the ball over just nine times.
Drexel (3-21, 1-12 CAA), which lost its ninth straight game, had four scorers in doubles figures led by 16 points from Sammy Mojica, who hit 5 of 11 three-pointers.
Rashann London added 12 points for the Dragons while Kazembe Abif contributed 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Rodney Williams had 10 points. Drexel had just five turnovers but hit only 37.3 percent of its shots from the field (22 of 59).
Led by Mojica, the Dragons came out strong to open the game and held a 24-13 lead after a London three-pointer with 4:48 left.
But Delaware scored the final 11 points of the half, including five from Hayes and four from Mosley, to knot the game at 24-24 at the break.
The Hens scored the first four points of the second half to complete a 15-0 run, took a 28-24 advantage, and held at least a share of the lead for the remainder of the game.
Drexel tied the game three times in the second half, the last time on a Williams layup with 8:10 left that made it 51-51.
But the Hens responded with a Holden jumper and a Hayes triple and led the rest of the way. After the Dragons closed to within 61-59 with 4:06 left, King-Davis followed with a free throw and a dunk and the Hens knocked down five free throws in the final 43 seconds.
