MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team opened its 2016 season on Friday by defeating Holy Cross, 7-1, and falling to Indiana, 5-2, at the FIU Panther Invitational.
In the Blue Hens' first game of the day, Delaware took the lead over the Crusaders in the top of the first when Mariah Kondravy singled home Leanna Gearhart, while Anna Steinmetz worked a bases loaded walk in the third to make it a 2-0 game.
Steinmetz then drilled a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, before the Blue Hens added three runs an inning later to put the game away. Giovanna Kolofer doubled home Shelby Jones for the first run of the frame, and after she crossed the plate on a wild pitch, Steinmetz walked again with the bases loaded to account for Delaware's final run.
UD senior pitcher Kiersten Coffman picked up the win after allowing just one single and striking out seven in five scoreless innings, while Jordan Cargile gave up an unearned run during two frames of relief. Kondravy went 3 for 3 during the win, while Gearhart scored three runs and Steinmetz drove in four during her Blue Hen debut.
Delaware and Indiana remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Rachel O'Malley drilled a two-run single to put the Hoosiers on top. Indiana increased its lead to three the following inning after consecutive doubles by Erin Lehman and Shannon Cawley.
The Blue Hens got on the board in the top of the sixth when Kondravy blasted a solo homer to centerfield, the 16th of her career. Kondravy, who set the UD single season home run mark a year ago, is now tied for second place in school history in career longballs.
Delaware continued to rally as a Lisa Stacevicz walk and a Steinmetz single put runners on the corners with nobody out, but the Blue Hens could not push across another run. The Hoosiers then tacked on a pair of insurance tallies in the bottom half when Rebecca Blitz delivered a two-run single. Gearhart scored on two Indiana errors in the top of the seventh, accounting for the final run of the game.
UD starter Carolyn Szymanski surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits in 3.1 innings as she was tagged with the loss, while Steinmetz and Mattie Nuccio each had two hits at the plate.
Delaware continues action at the tournament on Saturday when the Blue Hens take on Indiana at 11 a.m. and FIU at 4 p.m.

• Kondravy is tied for second in UD history with 16 homers along with Laura Streets (2001-04)
