MIAMI, Fla. -- Blue Hen freshman Anna Steinmetz continued the outstanding start to her career by homering in both contests as the Delaware softball team again split two games at the FIU Invitational by defeating Holy Cross, 7-0, and falling to the host Panthers, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Delaware, which split a pair of contests during all three days of the invitational, returns home with a 3-3 record. The Blue Hens will head right back to Miami next weekend for five games at the FIU Felsberg Invitational on Feb. 26-28.
Delaware and Holy Cross (0-5) remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Blue Hens exploded for six runs to take control of the game. Shelby Jones led off with a single, and after Danielle Wissinger reached on a sacrifice bunt, the runners moved to second and third on a bunt by Gabby Klecko. Giovanna Kolofer then singled home Jones with the first run of the contest, while Wissinger crossed the plate on a throwing error during a double steal.
Leanna Gearhart then doubled home Kolofer to make it a 3-0 game, before she scored on an RBI single by Mattie Nuccio. Steinmetz capped the rally with a two-run homer to leftfield for the Blue Hens before Wissinger reached on an error in the sixth and came around to score on a double by Kolofer to conclude the scoring.
That would be plenty of support for Blue Hen pitchers Kiersten Coffman and Jordan Cargile, who combined on a two-hit shutout of the Crusaders. Coffman allowed one hit and struck out eight batters in five innings of work, while Cargile also gave up just one hit in the final two frames.
Kolofer finished 2 for 3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Kondravy also was 2 for 3 in the nine-hit Delaware attack.
During the Blue Hens' second game of the day, FIU (8-2) struck first in the bottom of the third by scoring on a wild pitch before Steinmetz belted a solo shot, her fourth homer of the year, in the fourth to pull UD even.
The Panthers' Ashley Belans doubled home a run in the bottom of the frame, but Delaware answered back in the fifth when Kolofer singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a throwing error.
However Dani Mowry drilled a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth to put FIU back in front, and although the Blue Hens put two runners on base in the seventh, UD could not push across the tying run.
Coffman fell to 2-2 for Delaware after giving up one run in the final three innings, while starter Carolyn Szymanski was charged with two runs in the opening three frames. Gearhart, Nuccio and Kolofer each recorded a pair of hits at the plate for the Blue Hens.
Notes:
• Steinmetz has four of the Blue Hens' five home runs and 10 of 17 RBI this season
• Gearhart, who led the country with 11 triples last year, notched her first this season vs. FIU
• Nuccio has recorded a hit during all six games this year
• UD returns to action on Friday vs. Siena and Central Connecticut at the FIU Felsberg Invitational
