MIAMI, Fla. -- Delaware dropped a narrow 6-5 decision to Siena before responding with an 8-0 shutout of Central Connecticut as the Blue Hens split a pair of games on Friday during the first day of the FIU Felsberg Invitational.
Delaware (4-4) opened the scoring against Siena when Danielle Wissinger doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Leanna Gearhart in the bottom of the second, but the Saints (3-3) quickly responded with five runs in the top of the third off Blue Hen starter Jordan Cargile. Sammy Smaldone and Madysen Cossack delivered RBI singles during the rally, while Chelsey Drew smacked a two-run double for Siena.
An RBI single by Drew increased the Saints' lead to 6-1 in the fourth, before Delaware answered in the bottom half. Wissinger and Gabby Klecko each singled and Mattie Nuccio walked to load the bases, before Mariah Kondravy blasted a three-run double to left as the Blue Hens pulled within a pair. Kondravy then doubled home Nuccio in the sixth to make it a 6-5 game.
Delaware attempted to rally in the seventh, as a walk to Lisa Stacevicz and a single by Wissinger put runners on the corners with one out. However Siena reliever Lauren Butts struck out Madison Vicendese and got Giovanna Kolofer to bounce out to shortstop to end the game.
Kondravy and Wissinger each recorded three hits in the game, while Klecko added a pair of her own. Cargile, who allowed five runs, four earned, in two-plus innings of work, dropped her first decision of the year.
Delaware bounced back in its second game of the day against Central Connecticut (1-1), as Kiersten Coffman fired six shutout innings and Cargile added one to combine on a six-hit shutout. Coffman, who improved to 3-2, scattered five hits and struck out six while not walking a batter.
The Blue Hens would score all the runs they would need in the top of the third, as two runners scored when Stacevicz reached on an error before Shelby Jones delivered an RBI double. Gearhart doubled in the fourth and immediately scored on a Nuccio double, before Kondravy laced an RBI single to make it a 5-0 game.
Stacevicz drilled a solo homer in the top of the seventh, before Gearhart tripled home Klecko and Kolofer to conclude the scoring.
Game Notes:
• Delaware's eight runs and 13 hits vs. Central Connecticut were both season-highs
• Stacevicz hit the fifth home run of her career
