MIAMI, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team recorded a 7-2 win over Siena and a 7-1 triumph over the host Panthers on Saturday during the second day of the FIU Felsberg Invitational.
In the Blue Hens' opener, Delaware (6-4) jumped on Siena for four runs in the top of the second inning. After UD loaded the bases on a Lisa Stacevicz double, a Shelby Jones walk and a Gabby Klecko single, Giovanna Kolofer cleared the bases with a three-run triple to rightfield. Leanna Gearhart then stroked a single to right, plating Kolofer and giving the Blue Hens a 4-0 lead.
After the Saints (5-4) answered with an unearned run in the bottom half, Mariah Kondravy singled home Kolofer in the fourth before Morgan Schroll scored on a throwing error an inning later to increase the margin to 6-1. Siena got a run back in the bottom half on an RBI single by Madysen Cossack, before Mattie Nuccio led off the sixth with a bunt single and eventually stole home to close the scoring.
Delaware starter Kiersten Coffman improved to 4-2 after allowing two runs, one earned, on seven hits in five innings of work, while Jordan Cargile fired two frames of scoreless relief. Kolofer finished 4 for 4 at the plate, while Kondravy and Stacevicz added two hits apiece.
The Blue Hens scored a run in the top of the first inning against FIU (10-5) as Gearhart led off with an infield single and eventually scored on a double steal attempt, while Kolofer singled home Danielle Wissinger the following frame to make it a 2-0 game.
Delaware added two more runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Kolofer and an RBI single by Nuccio, before the Panthers finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Ashley Belans delivered an RBI single. FIU had the bases loaded with two outs in the inning, but Coffman struck out Jessica Hallett to escape the jam.
The Blue Hens then put the game away by scoring three runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Kondravy and a two-run single by Coffman.
UD starting pitcher Carolyn Szymanski earned her second win of the year after allowing one run on four hits in 5.2 innings, while Coffman fired 1.1 scoreless frames to earn her second save.
Delaware closes play at the invitational on Sunday by taking on Central Connecticut at 10 a.m. and again at 3 p.m.
