NEWARK, Del. -- The Blue Hens got contributions throughout the lineup and freshman Cole Benjamin picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound as Delaware ran its win streak to seven games with an 8-3 victory over Delaware State Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Dover but poor field conditions forced the move north to Newark. The Blue Hens took advantage of the home field advantage.
Leftfielder Jordan Glover, first baseman Nick Patten, and third baseman James Meeker each knocked in two runs as part of a 10-hit attack and Benjamin went five solid innings without allowing an earned run as the Blue Hens (12-4) continued their best start since the 1998 season when UD advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Delaware also picked up its sixth straight home win and downed the Hornets for the second time in nine days after recording a 4-2 victory back on March 6 as part of the Bob Hannah Invitational.
Jim ShermanThe Hornets (0-16) remained winless and continued to struggle offensively as they managed just two hits and could not take full advantage of five Delaware errors. Delaware State scored twice in the sixth but were trailing 8-1 at that point and never seriously threatened after a 1-1 tie in the second inning.
Glover, Patten, and Meeker each had two hits as did shortstop Nick Tierno, who reached base four times in five plate appearances and scored two runs. Glover also scored twice as part of an outstanding day that saw him increase his team RBI lead to 15.
Benjamin (0-1), who lasted just 2.1 innings to get a no-decision in his first collegiate start March 8 vs. Maryland, was solid in his first home start at Hannah Stadium Tuesday as he went five full innings, allowed just one unearned run and one hit and struck out four batters while walking just one. Relievers Conner Chasanov and Zach Flowers finished out the game with Flowers striking out four in two perfect innings to close it.
Delaware jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five innings as Kevin Mohollen led off with triple and later scored in the first inning and Glover delivered a two-run double and Patten singled home another run in the third to break a 1-1 tie.
A four-run fourth was highlighted by an RBI single by Doug Trimble, a run-scoring double by Patten, and Meeker's two-run single up the middle.
“It's all about keeping our approach,” Glover said. “We've been getting clutch hits but it's all about being aggressive early in the count. Everybody buys into the philosophy. Attack the fastball and good things happen.”
