NEWARK, Del. – The Blue Hens continued to share the offensive wealth Saturday afternoon as Delaware defeated Canisius, 13-4, at Delaware Stadium.
Junior Kirsten Hale (at left; Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) notched a career-high four goals for her second hat trick of the year while classmate Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) registered her first career hat trick.
Freshman Caroline Farley (below right; Medford, N.J./Shawnee) also had a multiple-goal game and finished the day with a season-best two goals.
Senior Casey Lyons (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada/Berkshire) dished out four assists to go along with a goal of her own.
In total, nine Blue Hens logged at least one point against the Griffs.
Defensively, Erin Wein (below left; Middletown, Md./Middletown) nearly doubled her previous career-game by tallying seven caused turnovers. With the total, Wein became the first player in program history to break the century mark in caused turnovers and now has 102 for her career.
The senior added two draw controls and two groundballs for the Hens, who improve to 5-1 on the year. Wein has now also broken the century mark with 100 career groundballs.
Sophomore Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) picked up her third eight-save contest of the year while grabbing three groundballs.
Tessa Chad led Canisius (1-2) with one goal, one assist, one groundball and one caused turnover. Megan Maloney and Brenna Shanahan recorded three groundballs a piece. Ellen Newton earned her first career start in the cage and allowed 13 goals with four saves.
“We played well as a team, pushed the pace and definitely took some risks. We didn't always take care of the ball and convert on all of our opportunities, but I was happy with how our defense came out, put pressure on them and made stops. It built a lot of momentum for us. One of our biggest strengths today was we were able to get a lot of people to rotate in and make impact plays.”
[On Kirsten Hale] – “We've always known that 'Kir' could be a scoring threat and we've made her a little more multi-dimensional in the offense this year and she's thriving. It's awesome to see her converting on some huge goals.”
Junior Kirsten Hale
“We came out today and knew we had to bring our best offense against a tough Canisius team. Everything was going well and we were able to run our plays. The lefty, outside shot was working well for me today. We're confident in our defense and attack, but it's all about the work ethic off the
field and giving 100% in practice, which we do every day.”
