WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Mariah Kondravy delivered a bases loaded double in the top of the seventh inning and the University of Delaware softball team went on to defeat UNCW, 5-1, Sunday afternoon at Bozeman Field in the rubber match of the teams' CAA weekend series.
Delaware (24-13, 6-3 CAA) entered the top of the seventh inning tied 1-1 with the Seahawks (22-17, 2-6 CAA), but loaded the bases with one out after Mattie Nuccio walked, Leanna Gearhart legged out a bunt single and Gabby Klecko reached on a fielder's choice. Kondravy then smacked a double to leftfield, driving home all three runners to put the Blue Hens on top.
Morgan Schroll replaced Kondravy as a pinch runner, and after she moved to third on a wild pitch, she crossed the plate when Anna Steinmetz grounded out to shortstop.
Kiersten Coffman, who had entered the game in the bottom of the sixth and escaped a bases loaded, no-out jam, then set down the side in order during the seventh to secure the victory. Coffman retired all five batters she faced in two innings of work while improving to 15-5 on the year. UNCW pitcher Haley Linderman, who fell to 4-3, allowed five runs on eight hits in a complete game effort.
The Seahawks struck first during the bottom of the second inning when Merritt Wilkinson led off with a double and came around to score when Sarah Davis reached on a throwing error by UD pitcher Carolyn Szymanski. UNCW had the bases loaded with one out later in the frame, but Szymanski retired the next two batters to escape further damage.
Delaware tied the game in the top of the third as Gearhart led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Klecko groundout, and scored when Kondravy singled to left.
The teams remained deadlocked until the bottom of the sixth, when the Seahawks loaded the bases on a single, a walk and a UD error. However Coffman then entered the game, getting Darian Roberts to line into a double play and Erin Brown to pop out to shortstop.
Kondravy, Gearhart and Nuccio each finished with two hits on the day for the Blue Hens, with Kondravy driving home four and Gearhart scoring twice.
Delaware returns home next weekend to host Hofstra in a three-game league series, beginning with a 12 noon doubleheader on Saturday.
