No. 6 James Madison Defeats Blue Hens, 11-2, To Complete Weekend Sweep

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The sixth-ranked James Madison softball team pounded out 15 hits as the Dukes completed a weekend sweep of Delaware with an 11-2 victory in six innings Sunday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park.
JMU (40-3, 15-0 CAA) took control early by plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Delaware starting pitcher Carolyn Szymanski. Taylor Newton drove home the first run of the frame with an RBI single, and after Niki Prince was hit by a pitch to force home a run, Jessica Mrozek delivered a run-scoring single to make it a 3-0 game. Hannah Hayes then reached on an error by Szymanski, allowing Newton to score the fourth run of the inning.
Delaware (26-17, 8-7 CAA) answered back in the top of the third as Hannah George led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Leanna Gearhart, and scored on a double to left by Gabby Klecko. One out later Anna Steinmetz drilled a double to rightcenter, driving home Klecko to bring the Blue Hens within 4-2.
Madyson Moran knocked home a run with an RBI single in the bottom of the third, while Jailyn Ford led off fourth with a solo homer and Mrozek later added a two-run single to increase JMU's cushion to 8-2. Newton drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth, before Erica Field belted a two-run homer in the sixth to end the game.
Dukes pitcher Megan Good improved to 26-2 after allowing two runs on eight hits, while Szymanski dropped to 10-9 for the Blue Hens.
Klecko finished with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored for UD, while Steinmetz and Alyshia Dellatore added two hits apiece.
Delaware returns home on Tuesday to host Mount St. Mary's in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
Game Notes:
• JMU has now won 14 straight games over the Blue Hens
• Delaware dropped to 0-15 all-time vs. ranked opponents
• The Blue Hens have lost three straight games for just the second time this year
• Steinmetz now leads the team and is tied for second in the CAA with 37 RBI
• Klecko had just one double on the season before adding two on Sunday
