Blue Hens Sweep Non-Conference Doubleheader From Mount St. Mary's

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Mount St. Mary's, 8-2 and 3-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Delaware Softball Stadium.
The Mountaineers (12-34) quickly jumped in front during the opener when Holly Buckel doubled home a pair in the top of the first inning, but Delaware (28-17) immediately answered in the bottom half as Mariah Kondravy singled home Leanna Gearhart and then crossed the plate on a double off the leftfield fence by Shelby Jones.
Gabby Klecko drove home Mattie Nuccio with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to put the Blue Hens in front for good, while she then crossed the plate on another Kondravy single to make it a
4-2 game.
After Delaware loaded the bases in the third Gearhart laced a three-run triple to right, before she scored on a groundout by Morgan Schroll to put the Blue Hens up six.
UD pitcher Kiersten Coffman (left) would make the lead stand up from there, as she allowed just three hits over the final four scoreless frames to earn her 17th win of the season.
Kondravy finished 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI during the win, while Gearhart and Nuccio each scored twice.
Gearhart opened the bottom of the first of the nightcap with her second triple of the day, and scored one out later when Kondravy (below) singled to rightfield. Delaware then loaded the bases in the third on a bunt single by Gearhart and walks to Nuccio and Kondravy, before Gearhart scored again on a groundout to shortstop by Anna Steinmetz.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Lindsay Heinze, but Delaware got the run back in the fifth when Gearhart walked, stole second, moved to third on a
sacrifice bunt by Nuccio, and scored when Steinmetz reached on an error.
Mount St. Mary's rallied in the top of the seventh, pulling within a run when Jessica Greenewald ripped an RBI single to centerfield.
However Coffman struck out Rachel Heinze swinging with the bases loaded the seal the win for the Blue Hens.
UD starter Carolyn Szymanski improved to 11-9 after allowing two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work, before Coffman picked up her fourth save of the year.
Gearhart finished 2 for 3 at the plate with three runs scored, while Jones also added two hits.
The Blue Hens return to Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday with a 12 noon doubleheader at Towson.
Game Notes:
• Delaware improved to 18-0 all-time vs. Mount St. Mary's
• The Blue Hens have won seven straight non-conference games
• UD has now won 16 home games, tied for the second most in a single season
• Gearhart now has eight triples on the year, one shy of the Division I lead
• Gearhart stole three bases on the day and moved into second place in UD history with 53 steals, 13 shy of the school record
• Kondravy moved into fifth place in Blue Hen history with 94 career RBI
• Szymanski became the fifth pitcher in UD history to win 40 career games
• Coffman's 17 wins are tied for fourth in a UD single season, and three shy of the record
• Klecko injured her hand sliding into home plate during the opener and did not play in the nightcap
