Hens Can’t Overcome Dragons in OT, 53-49
2/19/2017 6:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It's always a close one between the Delaware and Drexel women's basketball teams and Sunday afternoon was no different as the Dragons defeated the Blue Hens, 53-49, in overtime at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Senior guard Erika Brown (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) led the Hens (14-12, 8-7 CAA) with 21 points, including all five of the team's points in the overtime period.
Sophomore Nicole Enabosi (Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds while junior Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) swatted a game-best three shots to go along with eight points and five rebounds.
The back-and-forth affair featured nine lead changes and nine ties. Senior forward Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) forced the game into overtime with 13 seconds remaining as she knocked down a jumper at the top of the key to tie things at 44-44.
Jessica Pellechio posted a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, for the Dragons (20-6, 11-4 CAA).
“We had our opportunities, but we didn't capitalize when we needed to. We had shots and layups that we just didn't convert. It's frustrating, but I'm proud of this team's effort. We're playing extremely hard and it's disappointing not to finish this one out. We definitely didn't lose because of lack of effort. This was a great game and it's a shame someone had to lose.”
Senior Co-Captain Erika Brown
“We made some costly mistakes today. The defense is there; we played hard today. If we had less turnovers and boxed out more, we would've won this game.”
