NEWARK, Del. – Delaware held strong for an entire 60 minutes, but #4/4 Colorado pulled out the 9-7 victory over the Blue Hens at Delaware Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Hens led, 7-6, with nine minutes remaining in the contest before the Buffaloes (11-0) notched three unanswered goals late to remain undefeated on the season.
Delaware junior Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) guided the squad with three goals, five caused turnovers and five assists as the Blue Hens (5-4) returned to the field after an 11-day hiatus from competition.
Senior Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) added three points on two assists and a goal while freshman Christine Long (at left; Mendham, N.J./Mendham) tallied two goals of her own.
Senior co-captain Mary Abram (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline) led all players with a season-best four draw controls.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) allowed nine goals with four saves in 60 minutes of action.
Cali Castagnola led Colorado with four points on three goals and an assist while Paige Soenksen notched 13 saves in the cage.
“Colorado is clearly a quality opponent and that's always been my philosophy – if you want to be the best, you have to play and beat the best. I think our team was ready for that challenge today and we competed for a full 60 minutes. We lost a few of the battles in the home stretch, which came down to execution so we have to keep working on that part of our game. I think this team has a lot to be proud of in terms of competing and having a lot of different people stepping up for us tonight. We've gotten better over the last few weeks and we'll get better from today's game.”
Caitlin McCartney (2015) and Erin Wein (2016) hold the program record with seven caused turnovers in a single game.
· Delaware last hosted a Top-5 opponent on February 16, 2011 as the Blue Hens welcomed No. 1 Maryland to their first-ever game at Delaware Stadium.
· UD outshot Colorado, 26-22, and also held advantages in ground balls (20-15), draw controls (12-6) and caused turnovers (14-10).
