WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Blue Hens came out of the gates strong and never looked back Friday evening as Delaware defeated William & Mary, 11-2, on a Lax Sports Network telecast from Martin Family Stadium.
Junior Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led the charge with five points (4g, 1a) and three caused turnovers while tying career-highs with five draw controls and five ground balls.
Seniors Coley Ricci (at left; Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City,
Md./Mt. Hebron) added two goals apiece for Delaware, which improves to 2-0 in CAA action and 7-5 on the year.
Ricci also tallied five caused turnovers, a mark that matched Gohsler's total against #4/4 Colorado and is good to tie for third in program single-game history.
The Tribe (3-11, 0-3 CAA) kicked off the game with a Lindsey Jenks goal just 30 seconds into the contest before the Blue Hens tallied the next eight scores.
UD allowed just one more W&M goal from Nikky Prince in the second half before posting three of its own to close out the contest.
Delaware junior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) stopped eight shots for the second straight game and has tallied 28 saves in her last three contests.
Alex Lista and Elsa Rall split time in the cage for the Tribe and each collected four saves in the loss.
“There's no doubt our team played with passion tonight and 2-0 to start conference play is a good place to be. We went full throttle and left everything on the field. What adds fuel to our fire is the desire to play our best game together – something we have yet to do. We will continue to use our speed, grit and defensive power to generate momentum as we go forward.”

“We did a good job early on of just keeping our heads up and trying to get everyone involved. We opened things up and goals came one after another. I'm proud of our performance. The CAA is the grittiest conference you can get and every game is so drastically different. It is definitely a confidence builder that we've come out 2-0, but we keep it one game at a time and prepare for each opponent differently.”
