ELON, N.C. – A second half scoring draught proved to be the difference Sunday afternoon as #rv Elon slipped past Delaware, 6-3, at Rudd Field.
Tied 3-3 with just over 22 minutes remaining in the contest, the Phoenix (10-5, 2-2 CAA) scored three unanswered goals to hand the Blue Hens (7-6, 2-1 CAA) their first league loss of the season.
Junior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) registered a career game with 17 saves and a .739 save percentage while allowing the six goals.
Delaware received goals from senior Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), junior Megan Santoleri (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and freshman Sydney Rausa (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham).
Rookie Christine Long (Mendham, N.J./Mendham) led the Hens with four ground balls while senior Mary Abram (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline) posted three draw controls and sophomore Chantae Simms (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) collected three caused turnovers.
Stephanie Asher guided Elon with three goals while goalie Rachel Ramirez finished with 15 saves.
“We played tough today. Taylor sparked us all game with her talent between the pipes. We didn't get as many shots, goals or ground balls in the second half. Execution is critical to victory and we will use this game to get better.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Taylor Carpentier has registered 45 saves in the past four games.
· With two draw controls, Becky Gohsler moved into a tied for fourth in program history with 87 career draw controls alongside Shannon Burns (2011-14).
· Delaware held the 9-2 advantage in draw controls while Elon outshot the Hens, 34-24.
· The Phoenix take the series lead at 2-1 all-time.
