NEWARK, Del. – Sunday provided a lot of motivation for Delaware women's lacrosse. It marked the team's annual B+ Hero game in support of the fight against childhood cancer. No. 14/16 James Madison, a team undefeated in conference play, was in town. A win would mean CAA Tournament hopes were still alive. Oh, and it was the last game for the team's four seniors at Delaware Stadium.
The Hens capitalized on all factors Sunday afternoon as Delaware upset the Dukes, 15-12 on a sunny afternoon in front of nearly 600 fans in the home regular season finale.
Senior co-captain Coley Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led all scorers with a career-high six points on a career-best five goals and an assist. She added two draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover in the win.
Junior Becky Gohsler (below right; Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) posted her seventh hat trick of the season and tied a career-high with six points on four goals and two assists to go along with four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Fellow junior Megan Santoleri (top left; Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) registered a career-game of her own by doubling her previous high with four goals and an assist for five points.
Jamie Schwartz (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) also got in on the scoring action as the senior tied a career-high with four assists and a goal of her own.
Defensively, senior co-captain Mary Abram (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline) led the charge with game-high five draw controls while classmate Kirsten Hale (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) collected a game-best three caused turnovers.
Junior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was clutch in the cage once again with eight saves and three ground balls.
Margaret Fogarty guided the Dukes (11-6, 5-1 CAA) with three goals and an assist while Haley Warden tallied four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
“We've been working really hard to become the best team that we can be and we talked in the locker room pre-game that our best game is still out there for us. At this point in the season, that's a great thing as we continue to survive and advance. I'm happy that we were able to compete with the same intensity for 60 minutes on the offensive and defensive ends. When you get all those things going, it's really pretty to watch. This was a true team victory.”
[On hosting B+ Hero Day]: “Overall, this day is always a super meaningful one for the program. I couldn't be more proud of the alumni and current team members that have embraced the message that this experience is bigger than any of us. It means something to compete for the people who wore the jersey before us. To compete for people who aren't with us any longer. And to compete for people who inspire us to be where we are. To get a win consistently on this day has been an unbelievable experience for myself and for every player that has gone through this program. To have Kalyn and the McDonough family with us and to have that running tradition it means so much to me to know that we're doing something special. Hayden, no doubt the team loves her, she brings so much joy to us. And we know behind the scenes there's been such a struggle to conquer this cancer. Having her here means the world to the team and you can see that in how they played.”
Senior Co-Captain Coley Ricci
“JMU is a big rival that we always want to leave it all on the field against and I think we did that today. It was my last home game with my fellow seniors and my teammates and we wanted to go out strong. Hayden is always our motivation, she's really my 'BFF.' We love watching her smile and we play every day for Hayden. It's amazing that a five-year-old can inspire us so much. Everything was for her today.”
Junior Becky Gohsler
“A lot of people stepped up and scored today, which was awesome. It's always great to get a win against a tough opponent and rival like JMU. Obviously our motivation today came from it being the B+ game as we love Hayden, but it was also our last game at Delaware Stadium with our seniors, which is bittersweet for me.”
