Seventh Inning Explosion in Nightcap Gives Blue Hens Doubleheader Split With Delaware State

DOVER, Del. --The University of Delaware softball team erupted for 13 runs in the top of the seventh inning during the nightcap to earn a non-conference doubleheader split with Delaware State Wednesday afternoon at the Hornets Nest.
The Hornets (17-25) took the opener, 13-8, before the Blue Hens (19-24) answered with a 15-4 victory in the nightcap.
Delaware scored twice in the top of the first during the second game on an RBI double by Mariah Kondravy and a run-scoring single by Alyshia Dellatore, but Delaware State answered with single runs in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames to take a 4-2 advantage into the seventh inning.
However the Blue Hens then exploded for 13 runs to take control of the contest. With the bases loaded and one out, Sarah Coyne delivered a two-run double to tie the game, while Mattie Nuccio followed with a two-run single to put Delaware in front. Anna Steinmetz then doubled home two more, before Kondravy followed with an RBI double to make it a 9-4 lead.
Following the second out of the frame Julia Solderitch singled home a run, while two runs then scored when Miranda O'Donald legged out a bunt single. Ali Davis then capped the rally by stroking a double to leftfield with the bases loaded, driving home all three runners.
The opener got off to a promising start for the Blue Hens, as after Kondravy drove home the first run with an double, Dellatore blasted a three-run homer to give Delaware an early 4-0 advantage through a half inning. However the Hornets immediately answered with seven runs during the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Kondravy smacked a two-run homer in the top of the second to pull the Blue Hens within 7-6, but Delaware State countered with a run in the bottom of the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to increase the margin to 13-6.
Jordan Cargile singled home Dellatore in the fifth while Kondravy drove home Giovanna Kolofer with an RBI single in the sixth, but Delaware would not get closer.
Kondravy finished 6 for 9 with three doubles and six RBI during the twinbill, while Dellatore added four hits and four runs batted in. Steinmetz and Nuccio each went 3 for 7 with two RBI on the afternoon, with Steinmetz scoring four runs and Nuccio crossing the plate twice.
Taylor Curran, who fired a complete game during the nightcap, picked up both decisions on the day and is now 4-6 for the season.
Delaware returns to CAA action this weekend for a crucial three-game series at Elon.

• Kondravy moved into second place in UD history with 42 career doubles, five shy of the school record
• Kondravy also has 25 career home runs, one behind Steinmetz for the Blue Hen record
• Dellatore hit her third homer of the season
• Nuccio extended her hitting streak to six games
• Delaware State's 13 runs during the opener are the most the Hornets have ever scored against the Blue Hens
• Delaware's 15 runs during the nightcap was its highest total of the season
• The Blue Hens are now 30-7-1 all-time vs. the Hornets
