NEWARK, Del. – On a day that was dedicated to them, the Blue Hens seniors shined Sunday afternoon as the University of Delaware women's lacrosse team picked up the 14-6 victory over William & Mary at Delaware Stadium on senior day.
Senior goalie Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) tied a season-high with 15 saves while allowing a season-low six goals to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers as Delaware (7-9, 2-3 CAA) kept its CAA Tournament hopes alive.
Classmate Megan Santoleri (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added her fourth career hat trick with an assist for four points while fellow senior Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) tied a career-high with seven draw controls.
The Hens cruised to a 10-2 halftime advantage as sophomore Sydney Rausa (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) contributed a career-best five goals, including a hat trick in the first 30 minutes, and classmate Mia DeRuggiero (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) dished out five assists, a mark good for second in Delaware Stadium history.
Abby Corkum led the Tribe (4-12, 0-5 CAA) with two goals and an assist while Danielle Palmucci tallied two assists and one goal. Elsa Rall started the game in the cage and allowed 10 goals with five saves while Claire Duchene came in in relief and allowed four goals with five saves in the second half.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Kateri Linville
“I'm proud of our overall effort today. We competed and showed heart and I'm happy for our seniors to win at home with a lot of team members contributing. We talk a lot about how this conference is a dogfight. We love and embrace the competition and respect all of our conference opponents. We know it's anyone's game on any day. Today all we focused on was William & Mary as it's one game at a time. Drexel is our next focus. All-in-all, it was a great day with some great spring weather.”
Senior Goalie Taylor Carpentier
“It was an amazing atmosphere with it being senior day and one of our last home games. We have one more game and our underclassmen really made it special for us. We just had such high energy going into the game. It means so much. You want this more than anything on your senior day. I was nervous coming into the game because we needed this win to keep CAA Tournament hopes alive and also because it's senior day. Luckily the first thing I had was an interception and then I was locked in. It helped fire me up and I was seeing the ball really well.”
