Delaware Captures CAA Tournament Berth by Topping Drexel, 10-8
4/27/2018 8:35:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
NEWARK, Del. – Win and in. With one regular season game remaining, that's all it took for the Delaware women's lacrosse team to earn their second straight trip to the CAA Tournament.
Throw in some career milestones and a school record and that's just what the Blue Hens did Friday with their 10-8 decision over Drexel at Delaware Stadium.
Captain Becky Gohsler (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led the way with five goals, including the 100th of her career with less than one-minute remaining in regulation. The senior added three draw controls to break the Delaware single-season record and finish regular season play with 75 for the Blue Hens (8-9, 3-3 CAA).
Classmate Taylor Carpentier (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) also reached a career milestone after logging eight saves against the Dragons and became just the sixth player in program history to reach 400 career saves, a mark she obtained in just three seasons.
Carpentier joined sophomore Claire D'Antonio (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) in each picking up a game-high five ground balls while junior Caroline Farley (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) recorded a team-best four draw controls.
Maggie Stetson guided the Dragons (4-12, 1-5 CAA) with five points on three goals and two assists to go along with five draw controls while Zoe Bennett collected 11 saves in the cage.
POST-GAME QUOTES
Kateri Linville
“This was a great team win on an important and meaningful day honoring our B+ Heroes and alumnae. The best way to end the regular season is with a victory and the excitement and enthusiasm that comes with advancing to the CAA Tournament in back-to-back years. This really took a full team effort. Drexel came out and battled really hard. We respect them as opponents and found a way to win at the end.”
Senior Captain Becky Gohsler
“I don't think there's anything more motivating than having your season or career on the line. We knew going into it that it's always a dogfight against Drexel. But we were motivated, especially the senior class, to not let tonight's game be the last time we were ever playing collegiate lacrosse.”
[On single-season draw control record]: “I have to give all credit to my drawers in Caroline [Farley] and Syd[ney Rausa]. They're always talking to me on the circle on where they think the ball is going and a lot of the times they're placing it towards me. Half the time I might get the credit, but it really should go towards our drawers.”
