NEWARK, Del. – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team scored five goals in the first 38 minutes of the match and the Panthers went on to defeat the Blue Hens, 6-1, on a steamy Monday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Edward Kizza opened the scoring for Pitt (1-1) just 1:40 into the match when he scored off a cross from Alexander Dexter, while the Panthers' Javi Perez added a penalty kick goal six minutes later. Robby Dambrot contributed a goal in the 19th minute, while Kizza and Fiorre Mane later added tallies 1:02 apart to make it a 5-0 game in the 38th minute.
Delaware (0-2) played a much better second half, battling Pitt to a draw in the final 45 minutes. Blue Hens junior Robert Campbell put UD on the board when he corralled a loose ball off a corner kick from Ryan Mertz and scored from six yards out in the 56th minute.
However less than a minute later Kizza notched his third goal of the night off a rebound to conclude the scoring.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"I give Pitt a lot of credit. This is one of the highest quality teams I've seen for a long time. They came at us from the get go and the game was over by halftime, but there was a lot of quality. I was delighted by our response in the second half. Ultimately it became a 1-1 game in the second half. I think it showed resilience and leadership from our captains to step up our commitment, so I was happy with that response in the second half against a very good ACC team."
"Sometimes you need these lessons, and they can be good lessons so I prefer it to happen non-conference. Our schedule is a whopper with Stanford and Cal in there and more, but you have to use these as growing experiences going forward especially when conference rolls around."
