STANFORD, Calif. – Delaware did not back down from the challenge against three-time defending national champion Stanford on Sunday afternoon, but the Cardinal made the most of its chances during a 3-0 victory over the Blue Hens at Cagan Stadium.
Delaware (1-5) held an 11-8 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks against Stanford, but could not capitalize.
The Cardinal (3-0-3), which is receiving votes in this week's national poll, took control early on a pair of Amir Bashti goals just 1:41 apart in the first half. Bashti dribbled toward the left endline before cutting inside and beating UD goalkeeper Todd Morton low to the near side to give Stanford the lead in the 18th minute. He then rocketed a shot from the right endline past Morton to make it a two-goal game.
The Blue Hens' best chance of the half came when Halvard Ramstad's header from 12 yards out went off the right goalpost.
Stanford tacked on its final goal in the 69th minute when Zach Ryan converted a header to the near post.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"When you play games like today and match up in all of the statistics, you can be pleased with your group. There was so much we did well over the course of both games, but we gave up the most basic of goals with simple critical mistakes that are costing us dearly. This week is the beginning of the most important part of the season as we host Charleston in conference play. We will work hard to fine tune our performance; this is a group I continue to believe in and a group I am confident can make postseason play in the CAA."
