BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team evenly battled Pac-12 opponent California on Friday night but dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Bears at Edwards Stadium.
Cal (4-1-1) scored the lone goal of the first half in the 24th minute when Shinya Kadono collected a ball in the UD backfield and fired a low shot from the left side into the right corner of the net to put the Bears in front.
The Blue Hens (1-4) responded just over 10 minutes into the second half off a corner kick, as junior Halvard Ramstad lofted a shot from five yards out into the top left corner of the cage to pull Delaware even. The goal was Ramstad's first of the season and the third of his Blue Hen career.
However Cal regained the lead in the 69th minute when Francisco Perez crossed a low pass from the right side to Alonzo Del Mundo, who knocked home the game-winner from eight yards out.
The Blue Hens had two quality chances in the final minutes, but a free kick from just outside the box by Timo Hummrich and a header by Ramstad each went over the net. Both teams took seven shots during the match, while Delaware held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. UD keeper Blai Palmi, making his first start since the 2015 season, collected one save in the UD goal.
Head Coach Ian Hennessy
"Tonight's game was an intense game, with both teams toe to toe for the duration of the contest and the stats reflect that. The lads will maybe feel that we left something on the table against a very good Cal team, because after we tied the game we had enough looks to close it out. We made two critical errors which we were punished for, which happens when you play against the caliber of opposition in the Pac-12. Overall, it was a very strong team performance, a performance from which we should have gotten more from. It is a disappointed dressing room of young men at the moment, but we will rally the squad to face our biggest challenge this season against three-time defending national champions in Stanford on Sunday."
